V&A East Museum Launches in Stratford with Free Admission
One of London's most eagerly awaited cultural institutions, the V&A East Museum, is preparing to welcome visitors this week, marking a significant addition to the city's museum landscape. Located on the East Bank of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, the museum will officially open its doors on Saturday, April 18, 2026, following years of anticipation and planning.
A New Cultural Hub in East London
This new museum represents the sixth venue in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection and is strategically positioned just a short distance from the popular V&A East Storehouse, which debuted last year. V&A East distinguishes itself by offering free entry to the public, although certain special exhibitions will require tickets, ensuring accessibility while supporting curated experiences.
The museum spans five exhibition floors, each dedicated to exploring how creativity influences global culture. These displays delve into the history, arts, and politics of diverse communities worldwide, highlighting their roles in shaping cultural narratives. Inside, visitors will encounter over 500 dazzling artifacts that span centuries and cultures, providing a rich tapestry of human expression.
Notable Artifacts and Exhibitions
Among the standout pieces are masterworks from renowned artists such as Leigh Bowery, the iconic 1980s performance artist, and Althea McNish, a celebrated Caribbean painter. The collection also includes new acquisitions that celebrate cultural moments from East London's past and present, offering a localized perspective on global creativity.
The inaugural ticketed exhibition, titled The Music is Black: A British Story, traces the evolution of British culture through Black British music from 1900 to the present day. This exhibition features personal objects from music legends like Little Simz, JME, and Joan Armatrading, alongside powerful photographs by artists such as Jennie Baptiste, Eddie Otchere, and Dennis Morris. Ticket pricing is set at £20 for adults, with a discounted rate of £10 for visitors under 26 years old.
In addition to ticketed shows, V&A East hosts a free permanent exhibition called Why We Make, developed in collaboration with JA Projects and the V&A East Youth Collective. This exhibition encourages reflection on the motivations behind creative endeavors.
