Thor's Hammer in British Museum quiz by Art Fund

The Art Fund has launched a new quiz featuring ten objects from the British Museum, including a Viking Thor's Hammer pendant, to engage the public and raise funds for museum acquisitions.

Quiz details and purpose

The quiz, called 'The Great British Museum Quiz', invites participants to identify the objects from close-up images. Each correct answer unlocks a donation from the Art Fund to the British Museum's acquisition fund. The Thor's Hammer, a silver pendant dating from the 10th century, is among the items, alongside a Roman glassware piece and an Egyptian mummy.

According to Jenny Waldman, director of the Art Fund, the quiz aims to 'shine a light on the incredible objects in our national collections and the importance of supporting them.' The Art Fund has committed to donating £10 for every correct answer, up to a total of £50,000.

Impact and participation

The quiz is free to enter and runs until September 2026. Participants can play online, and the funds raised will help the British Museum acquire new objects for its collection. The Thor's Hammer pendant, found in Norfolk, is a rare example of Viking craftsmanship and reflects the Norse mythology that spread across Britain during the Viking Age.

More than 2,000 people have already taken part in the quiz since its launch. The Art Fund hopes to attract a wide audience, from school groups to history enthusiasts, to foster a deeper appreciation for cultural heritage.
