Michael Tilson Thomas, the award-winning conductor and composer who led major orchestras across the United States and Europe for more than five decades, has died at the age of 81. He passed away at his home in San Francisco on Wednesday, according to spokesperson Connie Shuman.

Career and Legacy

Tilson Thomas was a towering figure in classical music, earning 39 Grammy nominations and winning 12. He was honored with the Kennedy Center Honors in 2019. His career included leadership roles with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony, where he served as music director from 1995 to 2020.

Born in Los Angeles on December 21, 1944, Tilson Thomas came from a family deeply rooted in the arts. His grandparents were pioneers of Yiddish theater in America, and his father worked in theater and television. He began playing piano at a young age and studied at the University of Southern California, where he worked with legendary composers such as Pierre Boulez, Aaron Copland, and Igor Stravinsky.

Health and Final Years

In 2021, Tilson Thomas underwent surgery for a brain tumor and later returned to conducting. However, in February 2025, he announced that the tumor had returned. He conducted his final concert with the San Francisco Symphony in April 2025, a belated 80th birthday celebration. In a statement, he reflected on his life, saying, "My life's coda is generous and rich."

Tilson Thomas was also a composer, known for works such as Grace (1988), Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind (2015-16), and Meditations on Rilke (2019). He is survived by his husband, Joshua Robison, who passed away on February 22, 2025, after a fall. The couple met in junior high school orchestra and were together for nearly 50 years.

Conductor Leonard Bernstein once said of Tilson Thomas, "I don't fling the word genius around lightly, but I fling it around about Michael. He reminds me of me at that age, except that he knows more than I did."
