Hundreds of fans lined the streets of Mumbles, Swansea, on Saturday as the coffin of Bonnie Tyler, who died on July 8 at age 75, arrived in her Welsh hometown. The hearse, draped with a Welsh flag and accompanied by a framed photo, was met with applause and a rendition of her 1983 classic "Total Eclipse of the Heart," one of the best-selling singles of all time.
Memorial Procession and Public Tribute
The procession traveled through Mumbles to her village of Fernhill, with fans throwing roses and sunflowers onto Newton Road. Later, bouquets, artwork, and messages were left on the wall outside her home. Tyler, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, had divided her time between Wales and a villa in Albufeira, Portugal, with her husband Robert Sullivan. She died unexpectedly at a hospital in Portugal, according to her family, after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery and suffering a cardiac arrest, which led to a medically induced coma.
Funeral Arrangements and Family Statement
A private funeral will be held on Monday for her family. A statement from William Pressdee Funeralcare, on behalf of Tyler's loved ones, invited fans to line Newton Road from 3.15pm on Saturday, as she returned to Fernhill at 3.30pm. A celebration of Gaynor's life will take place at Swansea Minster (St. Mary's Church) on Monday, August 17, at 12noon. The statement added that Tyler's legacy "lives on in the timeless songs that made her a legend." Fans are also invited to donate to two charities she was a patron of: Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales and Cerebral Palsy Cymru.
Final Days and Career Highlights
Before her death, Tyler had been eager to hit the stage again for her European tour, telling Hello! magazine in March that she was "fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I'm really enjoying doing the shows. If you've got your health, you've got everything." That same month, she gave her final performance at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. She was hospitalized in May for a burst appendix and perforated intestine, and admitted to intensive care in June. After coming out of a coma, she remained "very unwell," with her team saying her recuperation was a "slow process." She died less than a month after doctors said they were "confident that she will make a good recovery, but it is going to take time." Tyler rose to stardom with her debut album, The World Starts Tonight, in 1977, and became renowned for her distinctive husky voice, winning numerous awards and earning three Grammy nominations. She married Sullivan in 1973, and since 1988 they owned a five-bedroom home near Santa Eulália Beach in Portugal.
