Founded by Tom Rowley in 2023, Backstory emerged from a pivotal career shift. Rowley, who spent 11 years as a journalist at various national newspapers, decided to leave his job in January 2022, describing it as a "moment of madness." The COVID-19 pandemic prompted him to reconsider his path, leading him to combine his skills in storytelling and communication with a passion for literature.
"Journalism is about spotting good stories and knowing how to communicate with people, and bookshops are similar in finding brilliant stories and connecting people," Rowley explained. He envisioned Backstory as more than just a commercial outlet, aiming to create a comfortable environment where people could linger and socialize without pressure to purchase.

Rowley noted that residents who have lived in the area for years often meet and form friendships, with one group humorously calling themselves 'the bookshop babes.' "We can't compete on price, but we can definitely compete on service," Rowley asserted. Winning the London Independent Bookshop of the Year award left Rowley "thrilled and honoured," especially given the strong competition. He attributed the success to the hard work and passion of the Backstory team, viewing the award as a testament to their dedication.

"Books just transport us anywhere, which is just joyful," he said, emphasizing how Backstory has become a cherished community asset where people feel a sense of ownership and connection.
