History enthusiasts, maritime fans, and those who appreciate historic vessels are in for a treat this summer. The Nao Victoria, a full-scale replica of a famous 16th-century ship, will be docking in London. Visitors will have the opportunity to step aboard and explore the vessel.
The Historical Significance of the Nao Victoria
The Nao Victoria is a replica of the Victoria, the first ship ever to circumnavigate the globe. Known as 'the greatest adventure in the history of navigation,' this 26-meter-long vessel has been meticulously recreated and now travels the world for public enjoyment. It offers a rare chance to get up close with a piece of naval history.
The Ship's Journey
Built in Spain in 1992, the modern replica of the Victoria has already embarked on its own voyage, visiting 17 countries across five continents to trace the original ship's route. The original Victoria, commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano, set sail from Seville in 1519 with 245 men. It returned in 1522 with only 18 crew members, making maritime history at a great human cost.
London Docking Details
The Nao Victoria will be berthed in London from June 30 to July 12. Visitors can board the ship and experience what the tumultuous journey would have been like, with one key difference: everyone who boards will hopefully disembark, unlike those on the first voyage.
Other Replica Ships in London
The Nao Victoria is not the first replica ship to dock in London. It is the third to arrive in east London and one of three reconstructed vessels in the Nao Foundation's fleet. The Nao Santa Maria visited in 2025, and the Oosterschelde, a historic Dutch tall ship, also visited the capital last year. London boasts several boaty attractions, including the iconic Golden Hinde, which has been docked in Southwark for 30 years, and the HMS Belfast. The HMS Wellington also opened to the public last year on the Victoria Embankment.
