Matariki Here Waka: A Theme of Unity

The Māori New Year public holiday in 2026 was celebrated under the theme 'Matariki herenga waka', which translates to 'Matariki is a mooring place for all canoes'. This theme encouraged inclusive participation, reflecting the growing recognition of Māori knowledge and traditions in New Zealand.

Dawn Ceremony at Bastion Point

The sun rose over Waitemata Harbour during the Matariki dawn ceremony at Takaparawhau, Bastion Point, New Zealand. The ceremony, known as Hautapu, gathered families around fires to witness the reappearance of the Matariki star cluster in the winter sky. According to Phil Walter, the event marked a significant moment of cultural renaissance.

Astronomical and Cultural Significance

Matariki, known as the Pleiades in English, is part of a larger star constellation called 'Te Waka o Rangi' or the canoe of Rangi. The holiday is a time for reflection, remembrance of the dead, and celebration of the present and future. Photographs by Julie Zhu and Richie Mills captured the joy and preparation involved.

Hosted by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei

This year, the Matariki celebration took place in Tāmaki (the greater Auckland area) and was hosted by the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei people. Food played a key role, prepared and shared with all attendees. People were encouraged to come together to learn, share, and celebrate Matariki.

Prime Minister’s Participation

New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, attended the dawn ceremony, highlighting the national importance of the holiday. The event also featured a waka, a traditional Māori watercraft, pictured as the sun rose over the Waitemata.

Inclusivity and Global Harmony

Tāmaki, home to many people from around the world, aligned with the theme of inclusion. The Māori New Year serves as a mooring place for all canoes, symbolizing unity and shared celebration.
