Duke of York's Theatre renamed Tom Stoppard Theatre
Duke of York's Theatre becomes Tom Stoppard Theatre

The Duke of York's Theatre in London's West End has been officially renamed the Tom Stoppard Theatre, paying tribute to the legendary playwright who died last year. The name change is effective immediately, with new signage expected to be installed over the coming weeks.

A fitting tribute to a literary giant

Tom Stoppard, known for iconic works such as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and the screenplay for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, passed away in 2025. The renaming follows a tradition of honoring playwrights while they were alive or posthumously, similar to the Harold Pinter Theatre, which was renamed in 2011 while Pinter was still alive.

Stoppard's acclaimed play Arcadia is currently running at the venue, meaning it will conclude its run at the newly christened Tom Stoppard Theatre. Another of his major works, Rock 'n' Roll, also premiered at the Duke of York's in 2006.

Why the name change now

The timing of the renaming also addresses the awkward association with the Duke of York title, which was formerly held by Prince Andrew. The Duke of York's Theatre has carried that name since 1895, long before Prince Andrew's tenure, but the title has become less favorable in recent years. The Tom Stoppard Theatre offers a more solid and culturally relevant identity.

According to a representative from Ambassador Theatre Group, which owns the venue, the decision was made to honor Stoppard's immense contribution to theatre and to refresh the theatre's branding.

A trend in West End renaming

The Duke of York's Theatre is not alone in undergoing a name change. The Shaftesbury Theatre is set to become the Judi Dench Theatre soon, following the Queen's Theatre's transformation into the Sondheim Theatre in 2019. These changes reflect a broader trend of naming venues after celebrated figures in the performing arts.

The Tom Stoppard Theatre, a smaller venue specializing in plays rather than musicals, is considered a fitting home for Stoppard's legacy. The renaming has been welcomed by theatregoers and critics alike, who see it as a long-overdue honor for one of Britain's greatest playwrights.
