David Hockney, British Artist, Dies at 88

David Hockney, the celebrated British artist known for his vibrant paintings and innovative techniques, has died at the age of 88, his publicist confirmed.

Tributes pour in for the pop art pioneer

The publicist released a statement saying: "The celebrated British artist David Hockney, one of the most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at home on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday."

Hockney was born in Yorkshire in 1937 and rose to prominence in the 1960s as a leading figure of the Pop Art movement. He is best known for his sun-drenched paintings of Los Angeles swimming pools, intimate double portraits, and expansive Yorkshire landscapes.

Throughout his seven-decade career, Hockney demonstrated a restless versatility, constantly experimenting with photography, printmaking, stage design, and digital media. His work often focused on perspective and the act of seeing.

An exhibition titled David Hockney: A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting is currently on display at London's Serpentine North Gallery until August 23, 2026.
