Casey Affleck has revealed that his father, Timothy Affleck, died this year, just months after the family lost his mother, Chris. The 51-year-old actor shared the news while promoting his new film Company at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Casey was joined on the red carpet by his girlfriend Caylee Cowan, his sons Atticus and Indiana, and other cast members. His brother Ben Affleck, 54, was also present to show support, as Casey dedicated the Gothic vampire-inspired movie to both of his parents.
Dedication to Both Parents
“It’s dedicated to my parents because I lost both my mom and my dad this year, and they were very important to me,” Casey said. “I really wanted to show this movie to them, and I didn’t get to. I think they would have liked it.”
The announcement follows the family’s earlier confirmation of Chris Affleck’s death on June 2, at age 83. Timothy and Chris divorced when Ben and Casey were young. Timothy had worked as an actor and aspiring playwright before struggling with alcoholism and taking on various jobs. He later became a counsellor at an alcohol rehabilitation centre in California after achieving sobriety in 1990.
Father’s Legacy of Sobriety
Ben Affleck previously spoke about his father’s recovery, calling his sobriety “the principal lesson and legacy of his life.” In 2020, he told People: “Part of being an adult is learning that your parents are just people. They’re not perfect. They were just doing their best.”
An obituary for Chris revealed that she had been given six months to live in December 2025 and hoped to see Casey’s son Atticus graduate from high school. She attended his graduation ceremony with the family on May 31, but died two days later. According to her death certificate, she died from cardiopulmonary arrest while visiting her son’s home.
New Film at Venice
Company marks Casey’s third film as a director and is competing at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The film’s dedication to both parents adds a personal layer to its premiere, as the Affleck family continues to navigate a year marked by significant loss.
