Supermarket Easter Egg Crowned UK's Best in 2026 Taste Tests
As Easter approaches, a surprising winner has emerged in the annual hunt for the finest chocolate treats. Researchers at The Good Housekeeping Institute have conducted extensive taste tests on 102 Easter products, ranging from budget supermarket own-brands to premium luxury items. The results reveal that supermarket offerings are outperforming established chocolate giants in key categories.
Sainsbury's Mint Chocolate Egg Takes Top Honors
The overall champion for 2026 is Sainsbury's Taste the Difference The Mint One Belgian Dark Chocolate Easter Egg. Scoring an impressive 89 out of 100 points, this supermarket creation surpassed famous brands like Cadbury and Lindt to claim the highest rating. Testers praised its vibrant mint-chocolate aroma, glossy appearance, and satisfying crunchy texture. Priced at £10 for 230 grams, it also represents excellent value compared to many premium alternatives.
Tesco Dominates Multiple Categories
While Sainsbury's claimed the overall victory, Tesco demonstrated remarkable strength across several classifications. The supermarket's Finest Double Layer Salted Pretzel Chocolate Egg earned the title of Best Supermarket Milk Chocolate Easter Egg with a score of 81/100. Reviewers highlighted how the pretzel chunks added a delightful crunch, creating what they described as "a lightly caramelised, biscuit-like, sweet and salty flavour in every bite."
In the children's category, Tesco achieved another significant victory. Their Easter Milk Chocolate Bunny, costing just £1.50, outperformed the Cadbury version with a score of 78/100. Testers noted its "very similar creamy flavour" to more expensive options while praising it as the "best value" product on the entire list.
Traditional Favorites Still Impress
Despite the supermarket successes, traditional favorites maintained strong positions. The Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Easter Hollow Bunny received a respectable 77/100, described by testers as "exactly how an Easter egg should be." Meanwhile, the classic Lindt Gold Bunny collection—featuring nine bunnies alongside a smooth egg—achieved an excellent 86/100, with reviewers noting it "simply wouldn't feel like Easter" without this iconic treat.
Value and Innovation Across Retailers
Morrisons earned recognition for offering exceptional value with their The Best Signature Collection Grand Golden Egg. This massive 1-kilogram chocolate creation, priced at £29.50, was named Best Value Milk Chocolate Easter Egg. Meanwhile, Lidl has introduced innovative bakery-inspired Easter eggs, including their new Deluxe Belgian Chocolate Croissant Bakery Egg featuring a caramelised white chocolate shell with biscuit pieces, shortbread, milk chocolate drizzle, and cocoa nibs.
The Good Housekeeping Institute's comprehensive testing also identified winners in several specialty categories. Hotel Chocolat's Milk to Caramel Extra-Thick Easter Egg (390g, £34.95) was named Runner-Up Milk Chocolate Easter Egg, while Cutter & Squidge's Billionaire Filled Easter Egg (550g, £32.99) and Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Extra Large The Caramel One Belgian Milk Chocolate (230g, £10) shared honors for Best Milk Chocolate Easter Egg Design.
Russell & Atwell's Milk and Blonde Chocolate Mini Monty Easter Egg (330g, £39.99) received the Best Fresh Chocolate award, highlighting the diversity of quality options available to consumers this Easter season.
