North London Pub to Reopen as The Mary Wollstonecraft After Gary's Bar Closure
North London Pub Reopens as The Mary Wollstonecraft

A cherished pub in North East London that closed its doors just before New Year is set to reopen under a new name and management. Gary's Bar, a staple on Stoke Newington's Church Street for over 30 years, bade farewell on December 28 last year. Now, plans are underway to transform the premises into a traditional pub named 'The Mary Wollstonecraft,' honoring the 18th-century feminist philosopher who has a prominent sculpture nearby in Newington Green.

New Management and Vision

The reopening is spearheaded by independent publican Nick Bailey, who previously opened The Robin Ale & Cider House in Stroud Green in 2023. The Robin is known for its traditional neighborhood pub atmosphere with a strong independent feel, serving ciders and real ales from small breweries across the UK, setting it apart from other pubs in Finsbury Park. Bailey aims to bring a similar ethos to the new venue.

Historic Building

The site at 181 Church Street dates back to the early to mid-1700s and is Grade-II listed. It features a large beer garden that has hosted live music, football screenings, and community events such as Irish language lessons. The building's 18th-century heritage aligns with its new namesake, Mary Wollstonecraft, who wrote the feminist manifesto Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1792 and was the mother of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley.

Previous History

The premises was converted into a pub around 1980 under the names La Manch and the Vestry before becoming Gary's in the 1990s. Gary's billed itself as a 'family-owned, independent and community-focused' pub with a wide wine selection, craft ales, and a residency with Yard Sale Pizza. The new pub is expected to retain the community spirit while offering a fresh concept.
