A new survey has found that nearly nine in 10 homeowners in the UK are planning to dine al fresco this summer, highlighting a continued trend for outdoor entertaining. The research, conducted by GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk, reveals that 89% of homeowners intend to eat outside during the warmer months.
Investment in outdoor spaces
The study shows that homeowners are investing significantly in their gardens to facilitate outdoor dining. Some 37% of respondents have purchased new garden furniture, while 30% have bought a new barbecue or grill. Additionally, 22% have invested in outdoor lighting, and 18% have added a fire pit or heater to extend the season.
According to the research, the average homeowner spends around £250 on garden upgrades for al fresco dining. This spending is driven by a desire to make the most of outdoor spaces, especially after the pandemic restrictions encouraged more home-based leisure.
Social and lifestyle factors
The survey also explored the reasons behind the trend. The most common motivation, cited by 45% of respondents, is the enjoyment of eating in the fresh air. Another 28% said they dine al fresco to socialize with friends and family, while 18% do so because it feels like a holiday experience at home.
“It’s clear that homeowners are embracing outdoor living more than ever,” said a spokesperson for GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk. “The garden has become an extension of the home, and people are willing to invest in making it comfortable for dining and entertaining.”
Regional variations
The research highlighted regional differences in al fresco dining habits. Homeowners in the South East are most likely to dine outside, with 94% doing so, followed by those in London (92%) and the East of England (91%). In contrast, only 82% of homeowners in Scotland and 84% in the North East plan to eat outdoors this summer.
Despite the popularity, the survey also found that 11% of homeowners do not plan to dine al fresco at all. The main reasons include lack of space (34%), poor weather (28%), and concerns about insects (15%).
Impact on garden product sales
The trend is boosting sales of garden products. Retailers report increased demand for dining sets, parasols, and outdoor kitchens. Garden furniture sales have risen by 25% compared to last year, according to industry data. BBQ sales are also up by 18%, with gas and charcoal models both popular.
The research underscores a lasting shift in how homeowners use their gardens, with al fresco dining now a staple of the British summer. As one respondent put it, “Eating outside makes even a simple meal feel special.”
