The City of London Corporation has announced ambitious plans to introduce a vibrant food market in the historic Smithfield area, marking a significant step in its 'Destination City' programme aimed at revitalising the Square Mile. This initiative seeks to transform the financial district into a bustling seven-day-a-week destination, shifting focus from weekday commuters to tourists and local communities.
Revitalising Smithfield's Victorian Heritage
Located adjacent to the soon-to-open London Museum in west Smithfield, the new food market will occupy a set of Victorian-era annexe buildings that have lain dormant since the 1970s. These structures, including a former fish market, cold store, and engine house, were once threatened with demolition but have been preserved as part of the museum's development. From early 2028, the site will host independent vendors and outdoor installations designed to complement the museum and enhance the overall visitor experience.
Phase One: A Culinary Hub for London
Pending planning approval, the market is expected to feature a diverse mix of established and start-up chefs, showcasing the best of independent London's cuisine, culture, and history. This foodie hotspot aims to reflect the city's rich culinary diversity, offering a unique destination for both locals and tourists. The City of London Corporation emphasises that this project will enrich the area, making it a must-visit spot for food enthusiasts.
Future Developments and Community Benefits
The food market is just the first phase of a broader transformation for the Smithfield annexe. A second phase, scheduled for completion in 2030, will introduce a boutique hotel along with ground-floor retail, food, and drink spaces. Additionally, a 'landscaped pocket park' will replace a disused service area, providing a green space for community events, digital art displays, and live performances. These efforts align with other major projects in the Square Mile, such as the revamp of St Paul's Gyratory and modernisation of the Barbican Centre, all part of the Corporation's strategy to boost tourism and foster a vibrant, year-round destination.
