New Brixton Bar Opens with Levi Roots-Inspired Menu and Immersive Shows
New Brixton Bar with Levi Roots Menu and Shows

A new bar is set to open in South London, bringing an exciting fusion of food, drink, and theatre to the heart of Brixton. Brixton House Theatre on Coldharbour Lane will introduce The House Bar, a new venture offering Jamaican and Latin American-inspired street food, created in collaboration with Reggae Reggae Sauce inventor Levi Roots. The bar opens on Thursday, April 30, and aims to provide theatre-goers with an immersive experience both on stage and on their plates.

Levi Roots and Local Chef Collaboration

Levi Roots has also mentored local chef Karma Sherpa, who owns the BBQ restaurant The Joint, to bring his distinct culinary style to the menu. Guests can expect a diverse lineup featuring Jamaican flavors alongside traditional Colombian, Argentinean, and Mexican street foods. This menu is designed to complement the current play, 'My Uncle Is Not Pablo Escobar', co-created by Valentina Andrade, Elizabeth Alvarado, Lucy Wray, Tommy Ross-Williams, and Joana Nastari.

Supporting Local Community

Brixton House was established to serve the local community during a period of multiple bar closures in the area. Delia Barker, CEO of Brixton House, stated: "We want The House Bar to be part of our story that roots us in Brixton. We have found a way to work with local businesses to open up our House as a place to gather and socialise. Supporting talent is in our DNA, and we want that reflected in everything we do, from our stages to our bar and kitchen." She added: "We want local people to feel they can drop in, whether for a show, to meet friends, or just for a plate or a pastry. Creating this kind of vibe showcases Brixton House at its best: open and accessible to the communities around us."

Signature Drinks and Evening Events

Alongside the food, the bar will offer a 'Reggae Reggae Bloody Mary' inspired by Roots' famous sauce, as well as Brixton House's rum punch. Other drinks include Cuban rum-based strawberry daiquiris, Mexican Spicy Margaritas, and Peruvian Pisco Sours. After shows, evenings will feature masterclasses, Rum and Dominoes nights, and soulful music spanning generations. The House Bar has been revamped to support local talent and trade, sourcing from Brixton suppliers such as Brixton Spirits for gin, vodka, and rum; Brixton Brewery for beers; a Latin American tequila importer; and sustainable wines and artisan juices from Brother Joe's.

Quotes from Collaborators

Levi Roots, Chair of Brixton House, commented: "Working with Karma to create this refreshed menu has been an absolute joy and we can’t wait to bring it to the table for the local community, and hopefully some new faces too! Brixton House is a theatre that offers more than shows, and we have taken inspiration from our own stories to curate a menu, so there’s going to be something delicious for everyone." Karma Sherpa, who grew up in Brixton, added: "I feel honoured to embark on this collaboration with Levi Roots. Both Brixtonians, we connected and built a friendship around our shared passions for food and cooking, and how dining together brings people together. Brixton House is the perfect home to tell our story and many others. I have been honoured to curate this new menu under Levi’s mentorship, sharing our cultural and culinary stories to develop a brand-new food menu for Brixton House in the heart of our hometown."

The House Bar opens on Thursday, April 30, at Brixton House, 385 Coldharbour Lane, London SW9 8GL.
