Greggs Customer Discovers Mould Near Cakes in West London Store

A Greggs customer in West London was left feeling disgusted and sick after spotting mould and dust directly beside the chain's cake display cabinet. The incident occurred at the high street branch in Feltham on January 9, 2026, and was captured on video by the shocked shopper.

Filthy Conditions Next to Fresh Cakes

The footage shows the mould and grime positioned just centimetres away from freshly made cakes, including vanilla custard slices and jammy heart biscuits, which were believed to have been prepared that same day. The customer, a father who wishes to remain anonymous, had visited the store to pick up a treat for his child after school.

"I completely lost my appetite," he said. "At first I didn't spot the dirt, but then I had a closer look and I was shocked. There was dust on the walls next to the cakes and you can blatantly see mould dripping down the glass. I felt sick."

5-Star Hygiene Rating Questioned

Despite the store holding a 5-star food hygiene rating, the customer expressed complete shock about the cleanliness standards. He immediately left without making a purchase, concerned about potential health risks.

"I understand Greggs isn't up there as 'one of the best' but it is still a food place," he added. "You expect everything to be clean. I would never have forgiven myself if I had given my child a snack from there. It's probably riddled with diseases and it's a massive health and safety risk."

Chain Responds and Resolves Issue

The customer initially shared his experience with Talk To The Press and now wants to circulate the footage to warn other customers. Following the school pick-up, he opted for McDonald's instead to get a safe and mould-free Happy Meal for his child.

A spokesperson for Greggs stated: "We take all matters of food safety extremely seriously. Our customer care team are in contact with the customer and we are investigating this matter as a priority."

Greggs confirmed on March 3, 2026, that the hygiene problem has now been thoroughly resolved at the Feltham branch. The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining high standards across all locations.

Broader Implications for Food Safety

This incident raises questions about how food hygiene ratings are maintained and monitored, even at establishments with top scores. Customers rely on these ratings when choosing where to eat, particularly when purchasing items for children.

The father concluded: "I won't be going back to that - or any - Greggs anytime soon until they sort it out." His experience serves as a reminder for all food establishments to regularly inspect and clean all areas, not just those directly involved in food preparation.
