McDonald’s has been serving up burgers and fries in the UK for 54 years, and during that time, numerous menu items have come and gone. In the 1970s, Onion Nuggets were introduced before being replaced by Chicken McNuggets, and the 1990s saw the arrival of McPizza. More recent losses include the Chicken Legend, Breakfast Bagels, and the McRib. However, according to devoted fans of the fast-food chain, the single greatest item that deserves a comeback is the McChicken Korma Naan.
What was the McChicken Korma Naan?
The McChicken Korma Naan was a limited-edition addition to the UK menu in May 1999. It was part of McDonald’s ‘Curry and Spice’ promotion, which also featured a Lamb McSpicy. The chicken burger consisted of a Korma-flavored chicken patty with a crispy coating, topped with lettuce and a mango sauce, all served inside naan bread. The price? Just £1.99. Even more affordable was the Lamb McSpicy, which included a spicy lamb patty, a yogurt and coriander sauce, and lettuce, enclosed in a sesame seed bun.
Fan reactions and nostalgia
McDonald’s customers have been reminiscing about the Curry and Spice items online, with many begging for their return and others astonished by the throwback prices. On Reddit, user u/LaughingGravy1001 shared a photo of the two items, writing: ‘Who remembers? The absolute best promotional burgers they have ever made. Came out for a couple of months in 1999, never to be seen again. The Korma one was absolutely divine.’ User u/zeppovendetta replied: ‘I think about the naan buns every now and then. Good times.’ Similarly, u/Professional_Ad_5437 admitted: ‘I can literally taste that naan. Loved it.’ And u/NeighbourhoodDude8058 hailed the McChicken Korma a ‘10/10’. Others described the curry burgers as ‘banging’ and pleaded for McDonald’s to ‘bring them back’, while a few claimed they could ‘only dream about such innovations now’.
Similar items since the 90s
While there is currently no naan burger on the McDonald’s UK menu, one did appear after the 90s. In 2019, McDonald’s launched an Indian Chicken Sandwich served in a garlic naan bun. This was also a temporary item and differed from the 90s version. Instead of a patty, it was made with Chicken Selects, an Indian-style relish, garlic mayo, red onion, lettuce, and cucumber. Priced at £4.19 on its own and £5.89 for a medium meal, it was part of the Great Tastes of the World promotion, which also featured a French Stack, a Canadian Stack, and a Jamaican Chicken with spicy jerk sauce. A similar promotion ran in October last year with the World Heist menu, bringing items from Australia, Poland, and Japan, but no Indian-inspired products were included. However, future global flavour drops are possible, especially with the World Cup approaching.
