London's Top 5 Bakeries: A Connoisseur's Guide

As a self-proclaimed bakery aficionado with extensive experience in both sampling and creating baked goods, I have cultivated a deep appreciation for the craft. London's culinary landscape, often unfairly maligned, actually brims with gastronomic innovation, particularly in its independent bakeries. Several establishments have recently garnered well-deserved recognition as among the nation's finest, and amusingly, these are spots I have frequented and adored for years. While social media hype can sometimes inflate reputations beyond reality, the following five bakeries deliver exceptional skill and quality that truly justifies their acclaim.

Chatsworth Bakehouse, Crystal Palace

I will never cease extolling the virtues of Chatsworth Bakehouse. Whether hosting visitors from out of town or recommending a destination south of the river, my answer is invariably Chatsworth. If forced to choose a single bakery for lifelong patronage, this would be my unequivocal selection.

Founded as a lockdown initiative delivering fresh sourdough and focaccia to local residents, couple Sian Evans and Tom Mathews secured their iconic red-fronted premises on Anerley Road in 2021. They have since captivated patrons from across the capital with their ever-evolving, seasonal offerings.

Expect cereal treat cookies, decadent pastries, and sandwiches fit for royalty. The bakery has built its reputation on masterfully crafted focaccia, operating a weekly sandwich collection service with Ticketmaster-like fervor. However, the absolute standout is their pizza, available every Saturday at 1pm, which draws hour-long queues of devoted customers.

I have waited nearly two hours for a slice and would gladly do so repeatedly. With rotating weekly flavors and toppings, Chatsworth's pizza is an unmissable experience that epitomizes their journey, team, and ethos.

Milk Run, Balham/Tooting Bec

The younger sibling to a renowned Australian brunch destination, Milk Run has generated significant buzz since its July 2024 launch. Situated in what I consider the epicenter of London's bakery and coffee scene, it transplants Bondi's distinctive atmosphere to the capital, offering exceptional pastries with inventive flavor pairings.

The bakery excels at coffee preparation, with weekend queues stretching outside as customers eagerly await pastries and brews to start their day. A fully visible kitchen showcases rows of meticulously prepared pastry creations, alongside freshly baked loaves, deli staples, and ample merchandise.

Milk Run's pastries are the undisputed highlight, with half the display case dedicated to regular favorites and the other half to rotating seasonal delights that sell out rapidly. The Coffee and Pecan Pain au Chocolat is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, where coffee enhances the deep, slightly bitter chocolate center, balanced by subtle sweetness. Paired with a chilled iced coffee on a sunny weekend, it represents pastry perfection.

August, Clapham

August Bakery on Battersea Rise in Clapham was recently named among the UK's finest artisan bakeries by British Baker, securing the top position in their expert's Baker's Dozen list. Led by husband-and-wife team Harry Robins and Florrie Beard, August launched just over a year ago and already offers an extensive array of sweet and savory pastries and buns.

While I do not frequently venture to Clapham Junction, the promise of a delicious treat makes the journey worthwhile. August's offerings rotate with the seasons, ensuring constant novelty, all complemented by traditional oat flat whites.

Although I have not yet sampled every menu item, their cinnamon buns are an irresistible indulgence. Impeccably crafted, they almost feel too beautiful to eat, yet breaking into them yields no disappointment.

Tarn, Highgate

Reaching Tarn requires considerable effort, including a trek across London and a daunting steep incline that feels like a Duke of Edinburgh expedition. This bakery tests your commitment, but the reward is well worth the climb.

The modest establishment provides a tranquil, serene setting ideal for a brief respite and people-watching. Tarn occasionally hosts pizza evenings, and if I lived closer, I would undoubtedly pop in for a slice. All products draw inspiration from seasonal ingredients, ensuring variety with each visit.

If available, do not miss Tarn's chocolate and espresso buns—miniature babka-style creations that are light and utterly delightful.

Maya's Bakehouse, Tulse Hill

Tulse Hill, quieter than neighboring Brixton, harbors its own gem in Maya's Bakehouse. Like many independent bakeries, it began during the pandemic with proprietor Maya producing baked goods from a home micro-bakery. Strong community support and extensive waiting lists for weekly drops via Delli enabled her to open a physical shop in 2023.

Featuring seasonal bakes and creative flavor pairings, Maya's is an essential destination for South London. The bakery regularly updates fillings for savory brioche buns, offering combinations such as pulled pork with sharp pickled jalapeños, pumpkin with lamb shoulder, and cheesy leeks with béchamel sauce topped with crispy kale. Predictably, these sell out quickly, so on my next visit, I am determined to secure one for myself. Any bun from Maya's constitutes essential eating.
