Lockdown Bakehouse, the beloved south London bakery that started during the Covid-19 pandemic, is opening its sixth branch in Putney. The new café will launch on Wednesday, June 3, at 79 Lower Richmond Road, SW15 1ET.
From Lockdown to London Institution
Founded in 2020 by Chris and Dawn Brumby, Lockdown Bakehouse began in a small kitchen supplying flour, eggs, bread, and pastries to locals and NHS workers. It then opened a pop-up café before finding a permanent home in Wandsworth. Since then, it has expanded to five locations across southwest London, including Barnes, Clapham, Earlsfield, and Raynes Park, and now supplies fresh bakes to over 180 cafés across London from its Wimbledon bakehouse.
What to Expect at the New Putney Café
On opening day, the café will offer coffee and pastries for just £1 all day. The menu includes £5 focaccia sandwiches, full Aussie breakfast, shakshuka, and American pancakes. Past baked goods have included TimTam doughnuts, smoked salmon and cream cheese pinwheels, and lemon and pistachio slices.
Chris Brumby said: 'South West London has always been home for us. Every site we've opened has been built around the local community that supports it. So many of our regular customers have followed our journey from those early lockdown days, and Putney felt like a natural next step. It’s a neighbourhood with a real sense of community, where people genuinely care about independent businesses, quality food, and places that bring people together.'
Opening Hours and Location
Lockdown Bakehouse Putney will be open from 7am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 4pm on Sundays. The address is 79 Lower Richmond Road, Putney SW15 1ET.
