The viral cheesecake shop that has taken London by storm is opening a new location in north London this month. Family-run bakery La Maritxu is bringing its Basque cheesecakes to Kings Cross in May.
A New Spot for Basque Cheesecake Lovers
A caramelised crust. An edge which crumbles at the touch. A rich and silky centre. Hungry yet? Yeah, us too. Luckily for north Londoners, we have a new opening which will satiate these cravings. Basque cheesecake shop La Maritxu has announced a fourth site in Coal Drops Yard, behind King’s Cross station.
Founded in 2021 by Lucia Larragoiti, its name adds the common Basque suffix -txu (pronounced chew), suggesting familiarity and affection, with the name of Larragoiti’s sister, Maria. Its rich and creamy delicacies made waves on TikTok, baked at high temperatures in the traditional Bilbao style to achieve the distinctive dark exterior and creamy centre. La Maritxu has expanded from its OG site in Connaught Village near Hyde Park to two others in Greenwich and Soho.
What to Expect at the New Location
From May, the fourth spot will serve the classic bake in four whole cake sizes – mini, medium, 8-inch and 10-inch – as well as single slices. There will also be a rotating selection of limited-edition flavours on offer. We don’t know exactly what these will be just yet, but La Maritxu’s other sites serve a manchego cheese flavour, a chocolate version and have offered up limited editions like goat’s cheese and pistachio.
To wash down these scrumptious slices, the Coal Drops Yard shop will be serving a drinks menu of coffees, teas, chai, matcha and soft drinks. Indoor and outdoor seating means up to 14 people can squeeze into the new space.
Opening Details and Location
The exact opening date is yet to be announced, but we know it’ll be some time in May. It has signed a 10-year lease for the site, which you can find in Unit 16, Bagley Walk Arches Coal Drops Yard, London N1C 4DH, so you will be able to fill your Basque boots whenever the craving strikes.
