Jersey Mike's, the American submarine sandwich chain with more than 3,000 US locations, will open its first UK outlet in London's Soho later this year, with the launch expected in late autumn. The debut branch will be situated on Argyll Street, followed by three additional central London openings.
Seventy Years of Sub History Comes to London
The company, which has been making subs for 70 years, will bring its Italian-leaning submarine rolls to the British capital. The menu features sliced meats and cheeses including provolone, ham, Swiss cheese, turkey, and cappacuolo, all dressed with the chain's signature 'the juice' – an in-house red wine vinegar and oil dressing. Customers can also opt to have their sub prepared 'Mike's Way', which adds onions, lettuce, and tomatoes.
The expansion follows the chain's long-standing success in the United States, where it operates over 3,000 branches. The London openings mark the brand's first venture into the UK market, a move that has been anticipated by fans of the chain.
From Mike's Subs to a Global Brand
The first Jersey Mike's location, originally named Mike's Subs, opened in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Current chairman Peter Cancro began working at the shop at age 14 and purchased the business in 1975 for $125,000, borrowing the funds from his high school football coach. He was 17 at the time of the purchase and renamed the company Jersey Mike's in the 1980s.
Speaking about the London expansion, Cancro said: 'Jersey Mike's has always been about making a great sub, taking care of our customers and giving back to the communities we're part of. I'm incredibly excited to bring that same spirit to the UK. We've spent decades building this brand in America, and now we're ready to introduce a whole new audience to what we mean when we say "a Sub Above".'
What the London Launch Means for the City
The Soho branch will be located on Argyll Street, near Oxford Street station. The choice of location has sparked speculation about the future of the old Angus Steakhouse building in the area, though no official confirmation has been made regarding that specific site.
The UK debut adds Jersey Mike's to a growing list of American food chains entering the London market, following the recent arrival of a legendary US hot chicken brand and the opening of a standalone location for one of London's best burger restaurants. The three additional central London branches are expected to follow the initial Soho opening, though specific locations and timelines have not yet been announced.
