An iconic north London pie and mash shop has reopened its doors, bringing back a beloved culinary institution to Islington's Chapel Market. The site, formerly home to M Manze, had been closed since 2019 due to rising rents and business rates.
Historic Reopening
No 74 Chapel Market now occupies the historic location, which first opened as M Manze in 1911 and served traditional cockney fare for over a century. The closure in 2019 prompted hundreds of loyal customers to bid farewell to the famous pie shop, many of whom had been visiting since childhood.
The Grade II-listed building retains its iconic M Manze shopfront sign, tiled walls, and wooden tables, preserving the original character that made it a local landmark.
New Menu with Irish Twist
Business partners Martin Savage and John Gordon have restored the site to its former glory while adding their own touch. The menu still features classic pie and mash with parsley liquor, but now includes an Irish influence. Savage told the Islington Tribune: 'The menu reflects the connection between Ireland and England and the working-class people who move between different communities. We'll put some different flavours in, and we'll have a few different flavours of mash. It's all about being creative and interesting with it – maintain the classic menu but with an Irish twist, which complements the local offer.'
Location and Details
No 74 Chapel Market is now open at 74 Chapel Market, N1 9ER, serving the same classic dishes that made M Manze a staple of London's cockney food scene for generations.
