Holy Carrot in Spitalfields Secures Top Spot as London's Finest Vegetarian Restaurant
Time Out has unveiled its updated list of London's greatest vegetarian restaurants for 2026, and a new establishment has claimed the coveted number one position. After a recent visit, the publication declared Holy Carrot in Spitalfields as the city's best vegetarian dining room, praising its exceptional quality and innovative approach.
A New Champion in Vegetarian Dining
The newly-anointed champion, Holy Carrot, has only been open for a few weeks but has already made a significant impact with its serious culinary offerings. This is the second branch of the Holy Carrot brand, following the original location on Portobello Road in Notting Hill. While the flagship restaurant serves an entirely vegan menu, the Spitalfields location introduces dairy and eggs into the mix, catering to a broader audience while still satisfying vegan diners.
Time Out's reviewer, Ed Cunningham, was effusive in his praise, stating that any dish from Holy Carrot would be a showstopper in London's other top vegetarian restaurants. The menu features standout items such as king oyster mushroom vol-au-vents, tempeh and smoked tofu schnitzels, and burrata with smoked pepper and citrus dressing.
Innovative Dishes and Chic Atmosphere
Cunningham also highlighted the pizzettas and flatbreads, which are crafted using fermented koji and silken tofu. For those fortunate enough to secure a table, he recommended trying the smoked chilli mushroom ragù or Holy Carrot's interpretation of a Georgian khachapuri, complete with oozing egg and molten cheese.
The restaurant's design is another key factor in its appeal. The space is described as extremely chic, with a nod to Spitalfields' historical fruit-and-vegetable market. Cunningham noted the earthy and simple yet charming aesthetic, which is punctuated by two bright pink, borderline psychedelic murals of giant mushrooms and gloopy trees, adding a unique visual flair.
London's Broader Vegetarian Scene
Time Out's comprehensive list of the best vegetarian restaurants in London also includes several establishments that are not fully vegetarian but offer outstanding vegetarian menus. Notable mentions include Dalston BBQ spot Acme Fire Cult, Slowburn in Walthamstow, and global comfort food bistro Jikoni in Marylebone, which recently opened a cafe version inside the new V&A East in Stratford.
This ranking underscores the vibrant and evolving vegetarian dining scene in London, with Holy Carrot leading the charge in 2026. For the latest updates on London's food and drink trends, readers are encouraged to follow Time Out London's channels for more insights and reviews.
