With temperatures set to hit 30°C this weekend, many Londoners will be searching for the best way to cool off. An outdoor swim is undoubtedly one of the most refreshing options. However, a common problem arises when everyone has the same idea, flocking to well-known lidos such as Parliament Hill and London Fields, turning a relaxing dip into a chaotic experience.
Fortunately, several lesser-known lidos are scattered across the city, including one brilliant but relatively hidden pool right in the heart of London. Oasis Sports Centre, aptly named, is a lido located in Covent Garden, just a five-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road Station.
A Historic Swimming Destination
Established in 1728, the lido boasts both an indoor and a heated outdoor pool, along with a gym, sauna, cafeteria, and three squash courts. The pool has an unexpectedly lengthy history, long predating all the surrounding buildings. It began as a Turkish bath in 1728, later closed, and then reopened as a public bath in 1852 under the name "Bloomsbury Baths and Washhouses."
However, swimmers are not using the same pool that stood all those years ago. The site has been modernized multiple times, with redesigns in the 1930s, 1960s, 1980s, and most recently in the 2000s.
A Beloved Community Spot
This beloved swimming spot has gained a devoted following among residents. One 81-year-old local who has held a membership for over two decades told MyLondon: "It's a nice place with nice people, especially in the morning." Another member said: "Central London needs community. It's really important to keep places like this." A further swimmer added that the lido felt like a 'secret'.
