A pair of sister towns in East Sussex have been ranked among the very best seaside destinations in the UK, according to a new guide by Time Out. Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea secured second place, beating out more famous spots like Whitstable and Whitby.
Why Hastings and St Leonards Stand Out
Time Out praised the towns for their vibrant arts scene, rich history, and excellent dining options. Located less than a two-hour drive from London, these towns offer a perfect summer staycation. The guide highlighted Hastings Contemporary, an independent art gallery in the Old Town, which hosts exhibitions and adult art classes. From June to September, the gallery is showcasing a first-ever exhibition exploring parallels between artists Lucian Freud and Henry Moore.
Historical and Quirky Attractions
Hastings boasts a 200-year-old bakery, Judges Bakery, popular with locals and tourists. The quirky Piece of Cheese Cottage, though permanently closed, remains a popular photo spot. George Street offers vintage shops selling retro clothes and antique furniture. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and sandstone cliffs, part of the Hastings Cliffs Special Area of Conservation. Visitors can explore Hastings Castle ruins and ride the historic funicular railway up West Hill for panoramic views.
St Leonards Charm
In St Leonards, Kings Road is packed with art galleries, antiques, and vintage stores. The indoor street food market Heist is a hit with food lovers, while Warrior Square Gardens provides a peaceful retreat. Numerous coffee shops and seafood spots complete the experience.
The recognition comes as the King Charles III England Coast Path, set to be the world's longest managed coastal path at 2,700 miles, nears completion, making beach towns more accessible than ever.
