On July 5, London will host a giant Cake Picnic with approximately 500 cakes, offering attendees bottomless slices. The event, organized by Elisa Sunga and Danny Knight, requires every guest to bring a cake as entry. Tickets have sold out, but a waitlist is open.
Origin of the Cake Picnic
Elisa Sunga, 35, from San Francisco, conceived the idea in 2024 after craving cake in a park but not wanting to bake alone. She posted on Instagram, and the response went viral, with 183 people attending the first event. The concept spread globally, leading to a Cake Picnic Tour in 2026 with stops in Mexico City, Melbourne, San Diego, New York, and Los Angeles.
London Event Details
This is the second Cake Picnic in London, following a sell-out session in Greenwich Park in 2025. The exact location is disclosed only to ticket holders. Two-hour sessions run throughout the day, with tickets priced at $50 (£38). Each guest brings a cake at least eight inches wide and three inches tall. Popular flavors include ube, black sesame, pistachio, and passion fruit.
Food Safety and Community
Despite concerns about eating food from strangers, Sunga reports no food poisoning issues. The event website encourages bakers to bring their best cake and provides safety instructions. Attendees receive a cake box to fill with slices. Sunga notes, 'There is a risk, as it's a potluck-style, community event – everyone is bringing their own cake.'
Future Plans
Sunga aims to bring Cake Picnic back to London soon and expand to other UK cities like Manchester or Bristol. She recently released a cookbook featuring recipes from the picnics, including Sour Cherry & Pistachio Buttermilk Cake and Chocolate & Earl Grey Whipped Cream Cake. 'I've found that British people really love cake and have such a passion for it,' she said.
