Epping Forest, a 2,400-acre ancient woodland straddling the borders of London and Essex, offers a cool retreat during London's unprecedented red weather warning heatwave. Known as 'the cockney paradise', it features 11 popular walks on apps like AllTrails and Komoot.
The Beech Trail: A Leisurely 2.6-Mile Stroll
For a leisurely afternoon walk, the 2.6-mile (4km) Beech Trail provides the perfect outing. Starting at The Oyster Shack and Seafood Bar, famed for its mango curried prawns, the trail heads east through thick woodlands of Mount Pleasant and Little Monk Wood.
According to AllTrails, the path then plunges south to Green Ride, twisting towards Loughton Camp Iron Age Hill Fort, about two miles from the start. The earthworks date back to 500BC, offering historic intrigue.
Dense Woodland and Streams
Continuing south into dense woodland, walkers encounter Debden Slade stream. Walking west along the water, the path loops north to Kate's cellar stream. The final stretch passes the western edge of Loughton Camp fort, leading steadily north back to The Oyster Shack for refreshments.
