Craftsman's Cabin: A Hand-Built Somerset Retreat
Craftsman's Cabin: Hand-Built Somerset Retreat

Craftsman's Cabin, a painstakingly handbuilt two-bedroom retreat in the Somerset countryside, offers a romantic semi-off-grid experience with artisan touches and modern comforts. Located in the village of Kingsbury Episcopi on the Somerset Levels, the cabin is tucked at the bottom of an orchard, providing a secluded escape while being just a short walk from a local pub.

Interior and Amenities

The cabin features Douglas fir cladding, hand-woven hazel panels, and an oak and maple kitchen. It includes a wraparound deck, an outdoor dining table, and a rocking chair. The standout feature is the outdoor bathtub with piping hot water, usable year-round. Inside, there are two bedrooms with sizable beds and soft linen sheets, a shower and bathroom, and a fully stocked kitchen with oven, induction hob, fridge, kettle, and all necessary crockery and cutlery. The living area has a cosy seating area and indoor dining table. On arrival, guests find tea, coffee, salt, pepper, olive oil, milk, bread, butter, eggs, and jam, plus towels and robes.

Activities and Digital Detox

While some internet access is possible by wiggling a phone high enough, the cabin encourages switching off. There is no television but a digital radio, board games (chess, backgammon, Scrabble, Bananagrams), and a selection of books. The Wyndham Arms pub is a two-minute walk away, and a handbook details local walks ranging from 45 minutes to over an hour.
