I nearly walked past the small food truck tucked among Brick Lane's bustling restaurants without a second glance. But then I saw the size of the sandwiches. At Bite Me Baby, the tartines stretch to 10 and a half inches, stacked high on sourdough bread and priced at just £10. These are arguably the biggest sandwiches hiding in London.
A Family Affair with a Polish Twist
The business was launched by sisters Anna and Ewa, who wanted to reinvent the open sandwiches they grew up with in Poland. The flavours are inspired by their two chihuahuas, Napoleon and Guinness, who often accompany them at the truck and have become part of the experience. Ewa said opening a food truck to share her recipes was her dream.
Healthy Yet Indulgent
Bite Me Baby is not just about the sandwiches. Everything leans into a 'healthy but still enjoyable' balance. Much of what they serve is made in-house, including spelt-based pastries and cakes. Ewa explained: 'We try to do everything ourselves, from cookies to cheesecake and even granola; we want to be very homey. We support local farmers as well.' The sandwiches themselves are surprisingly health-conscious despite their size. Built on 48-hour naturally fermented sourdough, they are designed to be easier to digest, and the menu even shows how much protein each tartine contains.
Generous Fillings and Fresh Flavours
The fillings are generous and thoughtfully sourced. I went for the Salmon Strategy, their bestseller, and it was properly stacked. Each slice was loaded with smoked salmon, cream cheese, dill, and a squeeze of lemon. Then I tried the Bite Me Italy, packed with mozzarella, pesto, a bunch of basil, and the biggest tomatoes I have seen in a while. It was so big it easily stretched into two meals for me. Both sandwiches were bigger than my face, and I quickly realised I had to eat them with a fork and knife.
Drinks and Extras
The drinks menu is long in a good way. Alongside classic coffee (with any milk) for £3 and kombucha, there are unusual lattes like ube, turmeric, and even a lavender matcha. I opted for their homemade coconut lemonade on tap, which tasted genuinely fresh rather than artificial. It had a natural sweetness that made it perfect for a sunny day. And then there is the small detail that makes a difference: every drink comes with free crisps. It is simple, but it adds to that feeling that you are getting more than you paid for.
Sweet Treats and Homemade Goodness
The sweet treats are just as carefully thought out. I tried a dark chocolate and orange tart that was vegan and gluten-free but still rich and indulgent, alongside a banana bread packed with walnuts that felt properly homemade, like it was straight out of my grandmother's kitchen.
Challenges and Triumphs
Despite its prime location, the journey has not been easy. Ewa said one of the biggest challenges was simply finding a space large enough for the truck to operate. 'The most difficult thing was to find space for us because we are quite big, but thankfully Truman Brewery gave us this space.' Like many street food traders, they were also at the mercy of the weather. 'We have been struggling since we started in November, the weather has not been the best. But now it is finally getting sunnier, so we are getting much busier.'
Now Is Their Time
With a menu that leans into fresh, summery flavours and a concept built on personality as much as produce, the sisters believe their moment is just beginning. Ewa said: 'We understand that now is our time.' You can find Bite Me Baby at 6 Dray Walk, Ely's Yard, London E1 6NJ. It is open every day, typically between 8 or 9 am and 6 pm.
