Asda launches yellow watermelon 'tasting like honey'

Asda has launched a new summer fruit: yellow watermelon slices, described as tasting 'like honey' and being sweeter than traditional red watermelon. The retailer's 'Exceptional Yellow Watermelon Fans' are available now in 300g tubs for £2.25.

What is yellow watermelon?

Yellow watermelon looks identical to red watermelon on the outside, with the same striped green rind. However, its flesh is bright golden instead of red. Unlike red watermelon, which gets its colour from the antioxidant lycopene, yellow watermelon lacks lycopene. The fruit is naturally occurring and predates red watermelon, with origins in Africa around 5,000 years ago.

According to Asda, the fruit is 'perfect for picnics' and 'typically sweeter and milder than red watermelon,' with 'tropical notes.' It counts as one of your five a day and has a high water content of 92%, giving it a crumbly texture.

Availability and rarity

Yellow watermelon is seasonal, typically available only in warmer months. Asda has not specified limited-time availability, but the fruit is rare, found mainly in countries like Thailand and Nigeria. This may mean only a limited run is possible. The product is now in stores.

Online reactions

The yellow watermelon has garnered praise online. On TikTok, user @hagrid.1mill0n0 said it is 'so much better than a red watermelon, I found it tender.' @oliviaquattromani added, 'Yellow watermelon is so much better! love it.' @brenda_asfk commented, 'It tastes richer,' while @kaykayrice noted, 'I always felt that yellow watermelon was juicier and sweeter than regular watermelon.'

Nutritional benefits

Like red watermelon, yellow watermelon is rich in vitamins A and C. Both seeded and seedless varieties exist due to cross-breeding. The fruit's sweet, honey-like flavour sets it apart from its red counterpart.
