A recent poll of 2,000 people commissioned by Škoda has identified açaí as the most commonly mispronounced word in the UK. The small, dark-purple berry, often served as a purée in smoothies, is frequently rendered in speech as “ack-eye” or “ah-sigh,” but the correct pronunciation is “ah-sigh-ee.”
Top Mispronounced Words and Their Correct Forms
The word “segue” came second in the poll, often mispronounced as “seeg” instead of the correct “segway.” Quinoa ranked fourth, gnocchi fifth, and chipotle seventh. The word “Worcestershire” placed sixth, surprising many Britons who consider its correct pronunciation a unique advantage over non-native speakers.
Other words on the list include “colonel” (15th), which some British people pronounce as spelled, though it should be pronounced “kernel.” The word “squirrel” also caused confusion, with some poll respondents mistakenly pronouncing it as a single-syllable word to rhyme with “girl,” instead of a two-syllable word.
Škoda’s Motivation Behind the Poll
Škoda, a Czech car company, commissioned the poll to highlight that its own name is often mispronounced as “scoder” rather than the correct “shkoda.” According to the company, the survey is part of a publicity effort to raise awareness about pronunciation errors. The poll also reflects a broader identity crisis in Britain, where people have forgotten that their peculiar pronunciations make English a nightmare for foreigners.
Impact on Language and Culture
The list includes a mix of imported foodstuffs and everyday words, underscoring the ongoing debate over how to say terms like “gif.” The poll suggests that Britons are increasingly unsure about the correct pronunciation of both foreign and native words, from “chipotle” (correctly pronounced “chi-poht-lay”) to “Worcestershire.”
