In a compelling new documentary, the remarkable conservation story of Kenya's black rhinos takes centre stage, narrated by the distinctive voice of acclaimed actor Tom Hardy.
A Conservation Success Facing New Challenges
The film reveals an extraordinary wildlife recovery effort. Black rhino numbers have dramatically declined to just over 6,000 worldwide, pushed towards extinction by relentless poaching and habitat destruction. However, Kenya has become a beacon of hope through its innovative conservancy model.
These fenced sanctuaries employ local communities while effectively keeping poachers at bay, resulting in significant population growth within their protected boundaries.
The Irony of Protection
Yet this success has created an unexpected crisis. As rhino numbers increase within the confined conservancies, violent competition between males has escalated dramatically. These magnificent creatures, safely protected from human threats, are now killing each other in territorial battles.
The documentary focuses on Borana Conservancy's head ranger, Ramson Kiloku, who possesses an incredible ability to identify every rhino in his care through their unique footprints and ear markings.
The Risky Relocation Plan
Faced with this tragic irony, conservationists devise a bold solution: moving 21 rhinos 100 miles to Loisaba Conservancy. The film doesn't shy away from the enormous risks involved, noting that a previous relocation attempt ended catastrophically with all 11 transported rhinos dying.
Before the ambitious operation can begin, Kenya faces another crisis - a devastating drought that threatens local communities dependent on agriculture and livestock. This environmental emergency leads to increased bandit activity and a worrying resurgence in poaching attempts.
While Hardy's narration channels David Attenborough with what some might describe as a 19th-century explorer's tone, the documentary surprisingly overlooks the broader threat of climate crisis to endangered species. The film's emotional impact is occasionally heightened by questionable musical choices, including a sentimental cover of 'Knocking on Heaven's Door'.
Rhino arrives in UK cinemas from 28 November, offering audiences a poignant look at the complex realities of modern wildlife conservation.
