For the uninitiated, the Shenmue series is a landmark in gaming history. The first two instalments, released on the Sega Dreamcast in 1999 and 2001, were once the most expensive games ever made and pioneered the cinematic open-world genre, including the invention of the Quick Time Event (QTE). After a crowdfunding record on Kickstarter, Shenmue 3 finally arrived in 2019 but was widely criticised for failing to advance the overarching narrative.
AI or Authentic? The Fanbase is Divided
