Die Hard is NOT a Christmas film, says public poll and Bruce Willis
Poll settles debate: Die Hard is not a Christmas film

A perennial festive feud that has divided households for decades appears to have reached a definitive conclusion, according to new research. The British public has delivered its verdict on whether the Bruce Willis action classic Die Hard qualifies as a Christmas movie, and the answer is a resounding 'no'.

The Public's Festive Verdict

A poll conducted by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has sought to end the argument once and for all. The results show that 44% of respondents firmly believe Die Hard is not a Christmas film. This group narrowly outnumbered the 38% who argued it is a festive feature. A dedicated 5% declared it their absolute favourite Christmas movie, while a cautious 17% remained unsure, perhaps weary of the annual debate.

Hollywood Heavyweights Weigh In

The poll's findings align with the view of the film's own star, Bruce Willis. Back in 2018, Willis settled the matter for himself during a comedy roast, stating emphatically: "Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. It's a goddamn Bruce Willis movie!" He has found an unlikely ally in Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, who was recently booed by an audience for sharing a similar opinion. Culkin argued the film is merely set at Christmas and could theoretically take place on any other holiday.

Britain's True Favourite Christmas Films

While the Die Hard dispute rages, the BBFC poll also crowned the nation's undisputed festive favourites. Topping the list was the classic Home Alone, with 20% of the vote. It finished well ahead of the romantic comedy Love Actually in second place (9%), followed by the timeless It's A Wonderful Life (8%) and the modern favourite Elf (7%).

The research also shed light on viewing habits, revealing that:

  • 43% believe it's acceptable to start watching Christmas movies from 1st December.
  • 13% begin their festive film marathon from the start of November.
  • A committed 8% enjoy Christmas movies all year round.

So, while John McClane's Nakatomi Plaza ordeal may remain a seasonal viewing tradition for many, the official consensus from the UK public is clear: Die Hard is an action blockbuster, not a Christmas card.
