Hollywood is in shock after the legendary director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found dead in their Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the deaths.
Son arrested on multi-million dollar bail
According to records from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Inmate Center, Nick Reiner, aged 32, was arrested on Sunday, 14 December 2025. He was subsequently placed on a bail set at a staggering $4 million, approximately £2.9 million. The specific charges he will face have not yet been made public by authorities.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call at the couple's residence in the upscale Brentwood neighbourhood shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Inside, they discovered the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman. While officials have not formally confirmed the identities, the home is known to belong to the Reiner family.
Police investigation points to homicide
The Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery Homicide Division has taken over the investigation, treating the case as an "apparent homicide". Captain Mike Bland confirmed the department's involvement. Investigators speaking anonymously to The Associated Press indicated the pair suffered stab wounds.
A significant detail from the initial police investigation is that there were no signs of forced entry at the multi-million dollar property, valued at around $13.5 million. Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that officers would continue to interview several members of the Reiner family as part of their ongoing enquiries.
A towering career in film and a shocking political reaction
Rob Reiner, who celebrated his 78th birthday in March, was the son of comedy icon Carl Reiner. He forged his own monumental career, first finding fame as Michael "Meathead" Stivic on the classic sitcom All in the Family.
He later became one of Hollywood's most revered directors, responsible for era-defining films such as Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. His wife, Michele Singer, was a photographer and philanthropist.
In a jarring and politicised response to the tragedy, former U.S. President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. He launched an unfounded attack, crudely suggesting the filmmaker's death was linked to his opposition to Trump, referring to a so-called "Trump Derangement Syndrome."
The film community and public await further details as the police investigation into this devastating event continues.
