Emmerdale's Chris Coghill reveals 'excruciating' karaoke scene took just one take
Emmerdale star films 'excruciating' karaoke scene in one take

Emmerdale star Chris Coghill has broken his silence about filming what he describes as an 'excruciating' karaoke scene that aired during Thursday night's dramatic episode of the popular ITV soap.

The Cringe-Worthy Performance

The memorable scene saw Chris's character, Kev Townsend, take to the microphone during a village karaoke party in a desperate attempt to win back his husband, Robert Sugden, played by Ryan Hawley. Viewers watched in equal parts amusement and second-hand embarrassment as Kev struggled both with his emotions and hitting the high notes during his heartfelt serenade.

Social media immediately erupted with reactions from entertained fans, with many questioning how many attempts it took to film the awkward moment and how the surrounding cast members managed to keep straight faces throughout the performance.

Behind the Scenes Revelation

In response to the overwhelming fan curiosity, Chris Coghill took to his Instagram account on November 19, 2025, to share a special behind-the-scenes treat. The actor posted a clip of him performing the entire song and answered burning questions about the filming process.

'First of all... thank you for the love for Kev,' Chris began his caption. 'Secondly a few people have asked how many takes it took to film tonight's 'singing'... the answer is I did the full song all the way through once. SO... under extreme duress from production here is the most utterly excruciating 4 f****** minutes of my life...'

The actor's candid post quickly attracted attention from his Emmerdale colleagues, who flooded the comments with praise and support for his commitment to the challenging scene.

Cast Reactions and Character Future

Danny Miller, who portrays Aaron Dingle, described the moment as 'Easily one of the funniest and most heartbreaking scenes I've ever done.' Meanwhile, Amy Walsh (Tracy Shankley) declared it 'iconic,' and Kevin Mathurin (Charles Anderson) called it 'TV gold, big man!'

Isabel Hodgins (Victoria Sugden) simply wrote 'We love Kev,' while Bradley Johnson (Vinny Dingle) added 'Absolutely brilliant!' The support even extended beyond the Emmerdale set, with EastEnders star Navin Chowdhry commenting 'I cannot stop watching this...'

Since arriving in the village earlier this autumn, Kev Townsend has quickly become a fan favourite, despite the initial complication of being Robert's husband, which created tension for dedicated Robron supporters. The character has experienced a dramatic storyline in recent weeks, having renewed his vows with Robert under false pretences about his terminal illness.

Although Kev does genuinely have a terminal condition, Dr Liam Cavanagh discovered that the character actually has decades remaining. Despite Kev's efforts to conceal this information to preserve his marriage, Robert ended their relationship last week for unrelated reasons.

The burning question now remains: with Robert still believing Kev's demise is imminent, will the awkward karaoke serenade be enough to win back his husband's affection?
