EastEnders' Barry Evans Returns After 21 Years in Dramatic Comeback
EastEnders legend Barry Evans returns after 21 years

In a move that has sent shockwaves through Albert Square, EastEnders has confirmed the monumental return of Barry Evans, a beloved 90s legend, a mere 21 years after his tragic on-screen death.

A Shocking Resurrection for a Pivotal Storyline

This bombshell news comes just days after the announcement of Pat Evans' own surprise comeback. Barry, played by the inimitable Shaun Williamson, will be resurrected not in the land of the living, but within the altered reality of Nigel Bates' mind. The iconic character's return is a central part of a special episode focusing on Nigel's dementia storyline, a narrative being developed in close consultation with Dementia UK to ensure sensitive and accurate portrayal.

The episode will delve into Nigel's memories, transporting viewers back to the 1990s. When his dementia symptoms intensify after an emotional festive film screening, he is visited by visions of figures from his past. Pat Evans, controversially killed off in 2012, reappears in The Queen Vic to offer guidance. She is not alone; stepping out from the shadows of Walford history is her stepson, Barry.

Putting Past Feuds to Rest

This spectral reunion is particularly poignant given Barry and Pat's famously fraught relationship. While alive, Barry held a deep-seated grudge against Pat, blaming her for the death of his father, Roy. Their constant feuding provided some of the soap's most memorable moments. However, in this special episode, the duo will put aside their differences to help their old friend Nigel in his time of need.

Barry Evans remains one of Walford's most iconic and unlucky-in-love residents. His exit on New Year’s Day 2004 is etched into soap history, as he fell to his death following a heated argument with his then-wife, Janine Butcher. In chillingly callous fashion, Janine did little to help him, later coldly implying his 'slip-on shoes' might have saved him.

The Cast Reacts to the Comeback

Actor Shaun Williamson expressed his exhilaration about returning to the famous Square. ‘It was a complete shock getting the call to go back to Albert Square, but so exciting!’ he said. ‘I have to admit to a few nerves (loads!) when I walked back onto the set of The Queen Victoria, but it was so great to work with old friends and colleagues on such a brilliant episode. Just goes to show, you never know what’s around the corner!’

EastEnders’ Executive Producer, Ben Wadey, also shared his delight. ‘I’m delighted to welcome Shaun Williamson back to EastEnders for Nigel’s special episode. Barry Evans was renowned for being one of Walford’s unluckiest residents, most notably for his choice of shoes, and so it was a privilege to welcome him back alongside Pat for these special scenes in The Vic.’

In further festive news for EastEnders fans, Sam Mitchell is also set for a December return, with actress Kim Medcalf reprising the role. Kim commented, ‘It’s such a joy to be asked to come back... especially as it’s the festive period and you know there will always be plenty of fireworks.’

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and is available to stream from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
