Duffy to Break Decade-Long Silence in Disney+ Documentary on Kidnapping and Rape
In a deeply personal revelation, Welsh pop sensation Duffy is set to recount the traumatic details of her kidnapping and rape in an upcoming Disney+ documentary. The singer, whose real name is Aimée Anne Duffy, will provide unprecedented access to her life story, including the violent attacks that forced her into hiding for nearly ten years.
The Mysterious Disappearance of a Pop Star
Duffy rocketed to fame in 2008 with her debut album Rockferry, becoming one of the biggest pop stars of the decade. However, her sudden disappearance from the public eye left fans and the music industry baffled. In 2020, she finally disclosed the horrifying truth: in 2010, she was drugged, kidnapped, taken to another country, and subjected to violent abuse and rape.
The new documentary, produced by Disney+ and Hulu Original, will begin production soon. A press release promises extensive interviews with Duffy, as well as insights from friends, family, and music industry associates. Director Gill Callan expressed her commitment to capturing the tension between vulnerability and confidence in Duffy's narrative.
A Harrowing Account of Survival
In a February 2020 Instagram post, Duffy revealed she was "raped and drugged and held captive over some days." She later detailed the ordeal in an essay on her website, describing how she was drugged at a restaurant on her birthday, held captive in her home, and taken abroad. "I can’t remember getting on the plane and came round in the back of a travelling vehicle. I was put into a hotel room and the perpetrator returned and raped me," she wrote.
Duffy recounted escaping by fleeing, though she "cannot remember getting home." She indicated the perpetrator remains at large and shared that she faced "veiled confessions of wanting to kill me" during the captivity. The trauma led her to spend almost ten years in isolation, estranged from her family, and at high risk of suicide.
Impact and Support for Survivors
Rape Crisis praised Duffy for her courage in speaking out. Katie Russell of the organization noted that such disclosures help other survivors feel less alone and ashamed. Disney+ head of content for Europe, Angela Jain, emphasized the responsibility to handle Duffy's story with care and sensitivity.
Duffy's journey toward healing has included releasing new music, such as Something Beautiful and River in the Sky, and working with a psychologist to move past the decade of pain. Her story underscores the ongoing need for support and awareness around sexual assault issues globally.
