Former EastEnders Star Dan Hatchard Reveals Harsh Realities of Acting Career
Dan Hatchard Opens Up About Acting Industry Struggles

Former EastEnders Star Dan Hatchard Shares Candid Insights on Acting Career

Dan Hatchard, best known for his role as Lee Carter in the long-running BBC soap opera EastEnders, has opened up about the demanding realities of working in the entertainment industry. In a recent TikTok video that quickly went viral, the actor delivered a heartfelt message about the challenges actors face behind the scenes.

The Carter Family Legacy and Hatchard's Departure

The Carter family made their dramatic entrance to Albert Square in 2013, instantly becoming fan favorites. Led by matriarch Shirley Carter (Linda Henry), the clan included patriarch Mick (Danny Dyer), glamorous Linda (Kellie Bright), eldest son Lee (Dan Hatchard), tomboy daughter Nancy (Maddy Hill), and troubled youngest son Johnny (played by multiple actors). Their takeover of the Queen Vic pub marked a significant era in the show's history.

Today, only Linda and Johnny remain from the original lineup, with Linda's mother Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe) joining the cast. Dan Hatchard's character Lee was given substantial storylines, most notably his battle with depression, before being written out in 2017 under executive producer Sean O'Connor's direction.

Hatchard's Viral TikTok Revelation

In his candid social media post, Hatchard began by acknowledging his successful career spanning 13 years, with credits including Our Girl, Ridley Road, and The Madame Blanc Mysteries, along with recent theater work in Northampton. However, he quickly shifted to discussing the less glamorous aspects of the profession.

'I'll tell you something, this acting game's hard,' Hatchard stated in the video. 'On the surface, it looks like I'm a raging success and everything's going smashing. I'm very proud of my credentials, but the gaps in between... there's still a ton of rejection. It's incredibly competitive and not for the weak.'

The actor emphasized that he continues acting out of necessity rather than desire: 'The only reason I carry on is because it's a need, not a want. I don't wake up wanting to be an actor; I need to be an actor, I need to be creative. It's like I'm in a constant state of having creative blue balls.'

He concluded with advice for aspiring performers: 'If you're thinking about being an actor, only do it if it feels like a need, not a want, because I genuinely wouldn't recommend it to anyone.'

Overwhelming Fan Support and EastEnders Speculation

The comment section of Hatchard's video flooded with messages of encouragement from fans and colleagues. Supporters praised his talent and expressed hope for his return to EastEnders, with one fan suggesting he contact producer Rowland Beckley. Hatchard responded diplomatically: 'Very sweet. But my future is outside of Walford,' while teasing, 'Not to say I won't pop back from time to time!'

Reflections on Leaving EastEnders

In previous interviews, Hatchard addressed his departure from the soap, acknowledging O'Connor's decision while highlighting the positive aspects of moving on. 'It was a comfortable job, but it's like a revolving door,' he told The Mirror. 'My concern was that staying in one place too long doesn't help you grow as an individual or reinvent yourself.'

The actor noted that leaving prevented him from being typecast and allowed him to maintain a life outside the show. 'I was very serious about it and enjoyed every second, but it was time to go. I guess now I'll never be typecast.'

Hatchard's honest portrayal of the acting industry's challenges has resonated widely, sparking conversations about the pressures faced by performers in competitive entertainment fields.
