Coronation Street's DI Costello Faces Comeuppance for Dark Crimes
Corrie's DI Costello to get comeuppance for crimes

Coronation Street's police force has been dealing with more than its fair share of criminal activity on the famous cobbles, but the situation has become considerably more complicated with a corrupt officer calling the shots.

From Trusted Cop to Criminal Mastermind

For months, viewers had believed DI Costello (Daon Broni) was a straight-laced police officer, particularly when he helped DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) bring down Joel Deering and pursued justice for Mason Radcliffe's killers. However, recent episodes have revealed his true colours in shocking fashion.

The storyline took a dramatic turn when Becky Swain (Amy Cudden) returned from the dead, exposing Costello's involvement in faking her death. Originally, Costello had told Lisa that Becky died in the line of duty during a robbery getaway. The truth emerged that Costello knew Becky was working undercover when things went wrong and helped her fake her death to escape dangerous gangsters.

Dark Threats and Murder Confessions

Since Becky's unexpected return, Costello has been determined to send her back to Spain and out of his life. His methods have become increasingly extreme, culminating in last week's confession that he arranged Tia Wardley's murder.

In a chilling threat to Becky, Costello revealed: "If you think Tia Wardley died a natural death, she didn't. I had to have her killed, and I'll do the same to you unless you sod off back to Spain and let the situation be." This has sparked a bitter feud that actor Daon Broni confirms will turn "darker" in coming episodes.

Comeuppance on the Horizon

When speaking about his character's development, Broni shared his initial reaction to the storyline: "I found out when Kate [Brooks], the producer, gave me a call to say, 'This is what we're thinking for Costello and how he's going to develop over the coming weeks.' At first I went, 'You what?' but then I went, 'This is brilliant!'"

The actor teased that Costello's comeuppance might arrive in the next few episodes, stating: "I can say that it's going to get a little bit darker before it gets better for Costello. He has been a naughty boy and there has to be some comeuppance."

Regarding other characters involved, Broni discussed Kit Green's (Jacob Roberts) complicated position, noting that Costello attempted to "manage" Kit through a promotion with strings attached. When asked whether Kit would ultimately side with Costello or Lisa, Broni suggested: "I suspect he might actually jump with Lisa."

The actor also confirmed that Costello's relationship with Lisa appears irreparably damaged, particularly regarding Lisa and Carla Connor's upcoming wedding. "I do think that ship may have sailed for Costello and his relationship with Lisa," he admitted, though he added that Costello remains skilled at manipulating situations.

Viewers can expect more tense scenes as Costello's web of deception continues to unravel, with the corrupt detective facing potentially devastating consequences for his actions.
