The Polish studio behind the acclaimed Silent Hill 2 remake has dropped tantalising hints about its next major project, a mysterious Nintendo exclusive currently known as Project M. In a new interview, Bloober Team's CEO has suggested the title draws inspiration from classic horror and could introduce a gameplay revolution.
A Vision for Nintendo Hardware
While details remain scarce, CEO Piotr Babieno confirmed in a discussion with Nintendo Insider that the project is 'extremely important' for the studio's future. He teased that fans of seminal titles like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Limbo, and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem will feel immediately at home.
However, the most intriguing revelation is the promise of a 'bold twist' never before seen in a horror game. Babieno emphasised that this innovative vision is one that 'could only exist on Nintendo hardware', sparking intense speculation about how the game might utilise the unique features of the current Switch or its anticipated successor, the Switch 2.
Decoding the Inspirations
The reference to Eternal Darkness is particularly notable. Released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube, it was renowned for its fourth-wall-breaking 'sanity effects' that manipulated the player's screen and pretended to delete save files. This suggests Project M could involve similar meta-gameplay or psychological tricks.
The mention of the monochrome platformer Limbo hints at a potential shift in perspective or visual style, while the core influences of Resident Evil and Silent Hill point towards a survival horror foundation. The project, announced in July 2024, is being developed with a 'significantly smaller' budget than Bloober's other major titles like the upcoming Silent Hill remake.
When Will We Learn More?
Babieno stated that it is still 'too early' to talk in depth about Project M but expressed confidence that the first details will be revealed 'very soon'. This timing strongly suggests an announcement could be part of the next Nintendo Direct presentation, which is widely expected to air in January or February 2026.
Nintendo has increasingly backed mature, horror-themed experiences in recent years, such as Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club and the forthcoming Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods by FromSoftware. Project M appears to be the next step in this strategic direction, potentially offering a unique horror experience crafted specifically for Nintendo's ecosystem.
