Bezos Met Gala Role Sparks Boycott and Criticism Over Fashion's Faustian Pact
Bezos Met Gala Role Sparks Boycott, Criticism

The Met Gala, fashion's most extravagant event, is facing unprecedented controversy as tech billionaire Jeff Bezos takes center stage as honorary chair and primary funder. The 2024 gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, has drawn criticism and boycotts, with activists decrying the growing influence of billionaires on the fashion world.

Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, attended the gala as honorary chairs, sparking backlash. Critics argue that Bezos's involvement, as the main source of funding for the Costume Institute exhibition and the party, undermines the event's integrity. Rumors have resurfaced that Bezos may acquire Condé Nast, Vogue's parent company, further fueling concerns about corporate influence.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani broke a decades-long tradition by skipping the gala, while activist group Everyone Hates Elon plastered Manhattan with posters reading "Boycott the Bezos Met Gala." The group raised £15,000 in a week and plans to protest the event. "Don't tell me Bezos has been involved because of his fashion sense," a spokesperson said.

Theme and Exhibition: Fashion as Art

This year's gala theme, "Fashion is Art," aligns with the exhibition "Costume Art," curated by Andrew Bolton. The exhibition explores the intersection of fashion and art, focusing on marginalized body types, including pregnant, aging, disabled, and nude forms. It pairs 200 sculptures and artworks with 200 garments, featuring pieces by Michaela Stark, Dilara Findikoglu, and Vivienne Westwood.

Bolton noted the theme's relevance: "A lot of the developments fashion has made over the last few years have really eroded. I don't feel as if we're seeing as much diversity on the runway as you did before." He hopes the exhibition will highlight fashion's cultural and personal value.

Criticism and the Event's Future

Cally Blackman, a fashion historian at Central St Martins, lamented the gala's shift from philanthropy to publicity. "The problem with the gala is that it's self-defeating. It's not about fashion, it's about publicity. I think a lot of the cachet has gone because it's funded by Jeff Bezos."

Despite the controversy, the Met Gala remains a major red carpet event, attracting 1 billion global video views on Vogue's site alone. Bolton defended the exhibition's placement in the museum's center, calling it symbolic of fashion's growing recognition in the art world.

The gala's dress code, while loosely interpreted, is expected to feature goddess gowns and literal nods to art, with Bolton joking about guests arriving as Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup cans.
