BBC executives are reportedly eager to secure a 1990s pop icon for the next full series of Strictly Come Dancing, following a standout performance in the show's festive special.

Christmas Special Success Sparks Series Rumours

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special, which aired on 25 December 2025, served as an emotional farewell to long-time hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman. The episode featured celebrity contestants including comedian Babatunde Aléshé, singer Brian McFadden, Gladiator's Jodie Ounsley, TV personality Scarlett Moffatt, and EastEnders star Nicholas Bailey.

While Scarlett Moffatt and professional dancer Vito Coppola won the Christmas Star trophy for their Cha Cha to Cher's 'DJ Play a Christmas Song', it was All Saints star Melanie Blatt who truly captured the attention of the show's producers. A source told The Sun: 'Melanie and Brian McFadden really caught the eye.'

Why Melanie Blatt Could Be a Frontrunner

Melanie Blatt, who has since forged a career as a chef, performed a Theatre Jazz routine to 'Santa Baby' by the Pussycat Dolls with partner Kai Widdrington. The judges awarded her an impressive score of 36 out of 40, which included a perfect 10 from head judge Shirley Ballas.

Her achievement was particularly notable given the physical challenges she disclosed before dancing. 'I've got scoliosis, and I've got metal rods in my spine, and that makes me quite stiff,' she explained. Despite this, her performance was a clear hit.

With Brian McFadden ruled out due to a nationwide Boyzlife tour from February to November 2026 (clashing with Strictly's September start), insiders suggest the path is clear for Melanie. 'The door is wide open for Melanie,' the source added.

A History of Girl Band Success on the Dancefloor

Former girl group members have a strong track record on Strictly. Alesha Dixon of Mis-Teeq won the glitterball trophy in 2007, while other singers like Frankie Bridge from The Saturdays and Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud have been runners-up.

Meanwhile, Christmas winner Scarlett Moffatt has hinted she is unlikely to join the main series due to childhood dance experience, making Melanie an even more likely candidate for the 2026 lineup.

Speculation also continues over who will replace departing hosts Tess and Claudia, with names like Holly Willoughby, Bradley Walsh, and Zoe Ball frequently mentioned by fans.
