A duck was attacked by a dog during a live BBC Breakfast interview with the RSPCA, prompting a rescue effort documented by a Richmond photographer. The incident occurred as the animal charity representative was speaking about pet control.
Attack unfolds during live broadcast
As the RSPCA interviewee stated, 'Our pets are completely under our control,' a dog swam up to a duck in the background and grabbed it. The duck, later identified as Lupita, tried to escape but was caught. Some viewers found the moment amusing, not realizing the severity of the injuries.
The duck suffered serious wounds, including a broken pelvis, according to photographer Vivi, who runs a Richmond photography Instagram account under the name Veev. She wrote on Instagram: 'Shame on those who have thought it was funny, an unruly dog grabbing a very beloved duck and nearly killing it.'
Rescue and recovery
Vivi documented the rescue effort. A person stayed by the riverside overnight to watch for the injured duck. The next morning, a man named Mark managed to pick Lupita out of the water. Vivi posted: 'Right now she is in my bathroom, quiet and eating and drinking and the rescue lady is on her way.'
An independent bird rescuer took Lupita to a wildlife vet in Wokingham because her leg was 'quite bad.' Vivi later shared an X-ray showing the duck's broken pelvis. She wrote: 'She is at our lovely rescuer Ann's house on meds and we hope the break fixes itself.'
Background on Lupita
Responding to questions about why the duck has a name, Vivi explained that Lupita and other ducks are regulars on the riverside. The breed is Domestic Duck, and they were dumped by an owner four years ago. A few locals have been caring for them since. Vivi urged followers to 'keep everything crossed' for Lupita, who remains in a serious condition.
