Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel delivered a pointed political jab at former US President Donald Trump while accepting a major award at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards ceremony in California.
A Night of Awards and Political Barbs
Kimmel's programme, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, secured the award for Best Talk Show at the prestigious event. During his acceptance speech on January 5, 2026, the 58-year-old comedian sarcastically thanked his political nemesis, whom he referred to as 'Donald Jennifer Trump'.
"A FIFA Peace Prize would have been better, but this is nice, too," Kimmel quipped after taking the stage. He went on to express gratitude to his wife and co-head writer, Molly McNearney, and the wider entertainment community for their support following a turbulent year.
Reflecting on a Turbulent Year for Free Speech
Kimmel's show was briefly pulled off the air by ABC in September of last year following comments he made about the 'MAGA gang' in the wake of commentator Charlie Kirk's death. Trump has repeatedly called for Kimmel to be fired for his vocal criticism of the US government and its supporters.
In his speech, Kimmel acknowledged those who stood by him. "Thanks to all the writers and actors and producers and union members... who supported us, who really stepped forward with us, and reminded us that we do not take free speech for granted in this city or in this country," he stated. "Your actions are important, and we appreciate them."
The Full Winners List and Kimmel's Final Dig
The ceremony also saw major wins for the film industry. Timothee Chalamet won Best Actor for his role in Marty Supreme, while Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another claimed Best Picture. In television, The Pitt won Best Drama Series.
Kimmel concluded his speech with a final, mocking tribute to the former president. "And most of all, I want to thank our president, Donald Jennifer Trump," he added. "Without whom we would be going home empty-handed tonight. So thank you, Mr. President, for all the many ridiculous things you do each and every day."
He hinted at more commentary to come, stating, "It’s been a banner couple of weeks, and we can’t wait to get back on the air tomorrow night to talk about them." This win caps a notable period for Kimmel, who was also selected to deliver Channel 4's Alternative Christmas Message in December, where he reflected on a "really great year" from a "fascism perspective."
