Comedian and Blue Bloods Star Alex Duong Dies at 42 After Cancer Battle
Alex Duong, a beloved fixture of the Los Angeles comedy scene and television actor, has died at the age of 42 following a courageous battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. He passed away over the weekend at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica after being hospitalized with septic shock, according to close family friend Hilarie Steele.
Peaceful Passing and Family Goodbyes
In a heartfelt statement shared with TMZ, Steele wrote: 'With the heaviest hearts, we share that our dear Alex passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by love and dear friends. He was comfortable and thankfully out of pain. [His wife] Christina and [daughter] Everest were able to see him last night, and he was alert enough to say goodbye to his little girl, whom he has treasured every moment since the day she was born.'
The statement continued: 'We are devastated, but so grateful for the support, prayers, and generosity you have all shown during this unimaginable time. Your continued support now means everything as Christina and Everest navigate the days ahead and arrange a beautiful celebration of his life.'
Rare Cancer Diagnosis and Medical Journey
Duong was previously diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, an exceptionally rare soft-tissue cancer that formed a malignant mass blocking blood flow to his optic nerve. This ultimately resulted in the loss of vision in his left eye. Despite undergoing extensive treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, the disease progressed aggressively.
Before his diagnosis, Duong had been preparing for an ambitious year of professional achievements. He had planned a nationwide tour spanning 41 states, with several dates scheduled alongside comedian Ronny Chieng.
Television Career and Community Impact
Duong built a substantial television career with roles on several prominent shows including:
- Blue Bloods
- Dexter
- Everybody Hates Chris
- Pretty Little Liars
He also contributed as a writer for Netflix's Historical Roasts series. Perhaps most notably, Duong gained recognition for his recurring role as criminal and gang leader Sonny Le in the American police procedural Blue Bloods, a character that became a fan favorite.
Duong's impact on his community became particularly evident as his illness progressed. His medical bills eventually escalated to six figures, prompting friends to organize a GoFundMe campaign to help cover costs and offset lost income.
Comedy Community Support
In August, a lineup of comedians including Atsuko Okatsuka and Andrea Jin gathered at Largo in Los Angeles for a benefit show titled The Alex Duong Has Cancer In His Eye Comedy Benefit Show.
Speaking about the overwhelming support from his peers, Duong told the Los Angeles Times: 'Comedians always have each other's backs when times are s—. We know how hard it is to pine and struggle and scrape by in this lifestyle, just so we can do these jokes and keep improving. It's a beautiful thing to see in this world; it really is.'
Early Life and Background
Duong was born the youngest of six children to Vietnamese and Chinese parents in Dallas, Texas. He later moved west to pursue his career in entertainment, eventually establishing himself as both a respected comedian and accomplished actor in Los Angeles.
The entertainment community mourns the loss of this talented performer whose work touched audiences across television and comedy stages nationwide.
