The second episode of the excellent anti-apartheid documentary series Free Nelson Mandela airs tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm. The episode tracks the turbulent 1980s as Nelson Mandela's health deteriorates and the South African government begins to see that allowing him to die in custody could lead to civil war. Meanwhile, an epic outdoor concert in London showcases Jerry Dammers's protest song for the ages, Free Nelson Mandela.
Death Valley Series Two Finale
On BBC One at 9.15pm, the cosy crime hit Death Valley concludes its second series with a touching finale. Diffident detective Janie (Gwyneth Keyworth) is leaving for a year in Portugal, to the dismay of her police colleagues and actor sidekick John (Timothy Spall). But someone's been bludgeoned at a rugby club full of eccentrics.
Other Highlights
Cruising to the Ends of the Earth on Channel 4 at 8pm follows the Diamond Princess docking in Kagoshima, home of Japan's most active volcano, as well as visiting sister ship the Discovery Princess in Alaska. Inside Barlinnie on BBC Two at 9pm meets offender Frankie, an addict since he was nine, who finds prison a stabilising force and has been sober for the longest time. Little Disasters on Channel 5 at 9pm continues the thriller adaptation starring Diane Kruger as social services get involved. Later... With Jools Holland on BBC Two at 10pm features Shania Twain, Arlo Parks, and Angine de Poitrine.
Film Choice
Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story on Channel 4 at 4.25pm is a delightful documentary about a couple caring for a young otter in Shetland, highlighting the mental health benefit of nature. The Lost Boys on Sky Cinema Greats at 9.40pm is a key work from the John Hughes era of US teen movies.
