Naga Munchetty is set to depart BBC Breakfast after 17 years to become co-presenter of Radio 5 Live's breakfast show, the BBC announced. The move comes amid reports of bullying allegations against Munchetty, though the BBC has stated there is no suggestion the allegations are linked to her departure.
New role on Radio 5 Live Breakfast
Munchetty, who has hosted the station's weekday mid-morning programme since 2021, will join Radio 5 Live Breakfast in January alongside a new co-host, who will be recruited later. The current hosts, Rachel Burden and Rick Edwards, revealed on Tuesday's programme that they will step down in December.
Munchetty expressed her excitement: "I'm thrilled to be joining 5 Live Breakfast in January. Live news, great conversations and connecting with audiences are what I love most about broadcasting, and 5 Live does all of that brilliantly."
Background on bullying allegations
The transition follows reports that Munchetty faced allegations of bullying on the BBC Breakfast set. The BBC declined to comment on individual HR matters, stating: "We do not comment on individual HR matters." There has been no indication that the allegations influenced her decision to move.
Munchetty emphasized her commitment: "It has been a privilege to be part of the BBC Breakfast TV team for the past 17 years... Presenting a flagship programme on 5 Live is an opportunity that was simply too good to pass up."
Salary and other changes
Munchetty's BBC salary for the 2025-26 financial year was reported to be between £360,000 and £364,999. Burden will transition to the weekday mid-morning programme, Monday to Wednesday from 11am to 2pm, after 15 years on breakfast. Edwards will continue hosting Fighting Talk on Saturday mornings.
