London has been officially named the best city in the world for culture in 2026, according to Time Out's annual survey. The capital's arts and culture scene received a near-perfect approval rating of 99 out of 100 from Londoners, with an expert panel scoring it 95 out of 100.
Unmatched Cultural Richness
Nowhere else in the world offers an arts and cultural scene as rich, varied, and beloved as London. Time Out's survey collected opinions from 24,000 locals across over 150 cities, who rated the quality and affordability of their hometown's culture. Combined with insights from Time Out's expert panel of writers and editors, the results crowned London as the top cultural destination for 2026.
Free Museums and Galleries
London boasts an extraordinary number of elite galleries and museums that are entirely free to visit. Sixty percent of locals consider art and culture in the capital affordable. New cutting-edge museums like the V&A East Museum, V&A East Storehouse, and the Young V&A are all free, alongside historic institutions such as the Natural History Museum, British Museum, National Gallery, and Tate Britain.
Upcoming exhibitions include a major Tate Modern show dedicated to Frida Kahlo and the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in the UK for the first time in 900 years. Time Out named the latter the single greatest thing to experience in Britain this year.
With over 250 museums, London offers everything from beautiful to bizarre collections. New museums opening soon include the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration in Clerkenwell (the world's largest illustration museum), the Museum of Youth Culture in Camden, and the London Museum in Smithfield. A Beatles museum is also planned for 2027.
Theatre Capital
Culture in London extends beyond artefacts to theatre, which scored 90 percent — the strongest rating of all cities surveyed. The West End hosts around 40 venues with new and long-established plays featuring major stars. Over 200 other theatres across the city nurture emerging actors and playwrights.
Diverse Cultural Offerings
London's cultural programme includes free comedy nights where top British comics honed their craft, gigs in grassroots venues and arenas, day festivals, and major sporting events that attract global audiences. Time Out provides comprehensive guides for weekend plans, monthly events, and everything from modern art to classic stage shows.
