Following Kevin's recovery from cancer, the couple, together for 11 years, transitioned from a monogamous relationship to exploring polyamory, a shift that has significantly boosted their confidence and sexual intimacy. Kevin, 38, now identifies as queer, a change he attributes to their journey.
From Monogamy to Open Exploration
Kevin and Jade, both in their late 30s, were monogamous for eight years before deciding to open their relationship three years ago. The decision came after Kevin received the all-clear from cancer, a period that had profoundly impacted their lives and sexuality. "We were in a great space and wanted to share that and accelerate it with other people," Jade explained.
Kevin's cancer diagnosis came less than a year into their relationship, requiring surgery to remove a testicle and subsequent chemotherapy. This traumatic period halted their sexual activity entirely. "The whole period was incredibly traumatic. I'm eternally grateful that Jade stuck with me through it," Kevin said. The experience shifted his relationship with his sexuality, making him more vulnerable and open.
Finding Confidence and a New Identity
The couple began attending sex-positive parties and clubs together, initially playing in group settings before progressing to solo dating. Kevin described the first time seeing Jade with another man as "really nice," noting an "instant uptick" in their own sexual activity and excitement.
Kevin, who has scarring from his operation, said exploring polyamory has made him "a far more confident person than I was before." He added, "My relationship to my own sexuality, confidence and body is miles ahead of where it was. If you'd asked me three years ago, I would have said I was straight. I now identify as queer."
Navigating Challenges and Mutual Growth
Jade noted that while the exploration has been mutual, challenges remain. "We do things at different paces. Kevin is really open-hearted and forms quite strong, close relationships with people, which can create a bit of an imbalance," she said. She has had to learn a balance between independence and togetherness.
Despite these challenges, Jade expressed that the experience has been enriching. "I'd never really considered non-monogamy before. There's this assumed way of being that you accept, and then suddenly you discover all this richness available to you outside monogamy," she said. "For me, it feels great when both of our cups are full. We're both getting meaningful, fun, exciting experiences independently of each other – and then also together."
